Tahr Hunting

thumb_Bull_Tahr_Content_-_1-50Tahr Hunting in New Zealand is something special as New Zealand is the only place in the world where a hunter is able to take a free range trophy bull tahr. Originally from the Himalaya’s, thar are reputedly the ultimate in New Zealand game, inhabiting the high alpine regions of the central Southern Alps. Hunting tahr is physically the most demanding hunting in New Zealand, hunters are often required to climb considerable distances in a day, in search of a trophy bull. The alpine areas where tahr are found are open, rocky, mountainous areas, with the tahr resting up in the highest crags during the day and venturing down in the morning and evening to feed. Hunters do not have to be experienced climbers, but should be fit and active, and able to walk in steep country. A positive mental attitude and faith in the ability of your Tahr Hunting Guide has resulted in a very high success rate on trophy bulls since owner/operator Al Kircher began guiding in 1985. Age is no barrier, with many older hunters successfully harvesting trophy bulls.

Bull_Tahr_Content_-_2-50Bull tahr are a renowned trophy, not only for their goat like horns, but also for their long shaggy coats which are in their prime in Autumn and Winter. The best time to harvest a trophy bull is April through July. Bulls retain their magnificent winter coats through to October/November, however the winter snows start in May and mid winter hunting is often dictated by snow levels.

Bull_Tahr_Content_-_3-50Hunting tahr is very similar to the high alpine hunting for Dall sheep or Rocky Mountain goats in North America. NZ Backcountry Guides uses the latest in outdoor equipment to ensure that both hunters and guide are safe and comfortable in the sometimes hostile environment.
